Verizon Fios Internet

Verizon Fios is hard to beat for high speed internet service and generous data allowances. Verizon isn’t widely available, but it’s best suited for those who just want lightning-fast internet at a reasonable price.

For most people choosing Internet Service is a choice between DSL, or Cable. But, if you’re lucky enough to be in the right service area Fiber is an awesome third option. The upgrade from cable to fiber is almost a dramatic as the upgrade from dialup to cable.

What is Fios?

Fios is an acronym for Verizon’s fiber-optic internet service, which features three different speed tiers — 200, 400 and Gigabit Connection. Fiber-optic service has great appeal, one of which is similar upload speed as your download speed. The Verizon Fios tag line is Get the fastest internet in America, only on the 100% fiber-optic network, however Verizon also offers other options for home internet service — DSL, LTE, 5G — but none of these go under the name Fios.

Recently Verizon announced five more cities now with 5G Home Internet service — Athens, Georgia; Dayton, Ohio; Jacksonville, Florida; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Tacoma, Washington — as it seeks to expand its home broadband footprint. Verizon Fios, the company’s fiber-optic internet service, has also received the J.D. Power award for US Residential Internet Service Provider Customer Satisfaction.

Verizon offers home internet via DSL for much of its footprint, primarily for those in the Northeast who are outside its Fios network. Verizon LTE Home Internet service is an option in 200 markets, beyond the 65 markets where Verizon 5G Home service is currently available. Basically our advice is visit the website, enter your zip code, and they will tell you what is available in your area.

Verizon Fios Home Internet prices and plans

Verizon Fios offers service with lightening fast speeds, and great customer service with no annual contract. There are three basic Internt Service plans at three different speeds. While the offer reasonable rates they have fewer options.

Here’s where you can get Verizon internet service

Availability for Verizon Fios is solely in eight eastern states — Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia — and Washington, DC. You can use the Verizon availability checker to see if Fios is available at your address.

Available internet plans with Verizon

  • Verizon Fios, which is 100% fiber-optic, offers three different plans
  • Verizon High Speed Internet, a DSL service, provides options for those outside the Fios network in the Northeast

Verizon’s Fios service has very elegant simple pricing with three different tiers — 200, 400 and Gigabit — except in the New York market, where the three offerings are 300, 500 and Gigabit. Most providers offer an introductory rate that goes up after a few months, however Verizon does not making it even simpler. However, since there is no long-term rate contract they can adjust your rate at any time. This is a concern, but their Fios rate is very reasonable so it’s an unlikely problem.

Since Fios is a fiber-optic network, it delivers download and upload speeds that are symmetrical. This means your upload speeds are the same as your downloads. This is another consideration that gives it more bang for the buck.

Not all addresses within Verizon’s service areas have fiber service available. Those areas that Verizon serves but don’t have Fiber Optic available usually do qualify for Verizon High Speed Internet (via DSL) in their area. DSL uses traditional copper telephone lines to deliver the internet to your home. It’s slower than Fiber or Cable, and not considered true broadband, however it’s reliable and a huge step up from Dialup Internet.

Fees include a phone connection/voice service which is required for DSL. You must also purchase a router from Verizon (a $30 one-time charge).

Verizon’s LTE Home Internet is Cellular Broadband. It uses the Verizon 4G LTE cellular network to connect to the internet in areas where no other broadband, or high speed Internet, options are available.

Typically if your address is in a rural area your options have only been to use Dialup Internet, or Satellite Internet – both extremely slow. This gives a better option for frequent users and is also portable for your laptop.

Customers should typically see download speeds of 25 to 50Mbps, with approximately 4Mbps upload, per the Verizon LTE FAQs. Verizon LTE Home Internet is $60 a month, or $40 a month if you have a qualifying, active Verizon wireless plan. The router will cost you $240 upfront or $10 a month for 24 months.

Verizon’s 5G internet service is a cellular Internet plan which uses ultrawideband 5G technology. It advertises max download speeds of up to 1 gigabit and an average 300Mbps. Upload speeds, however, top out around 50Mbps, depending on one’s location.

Unlike fiber, cable, DSL and other common modes of internet that get you online with a wired connection, cellular internet plans like Verizon 5G Home Internet are wireless. Your home will get its internet connection wirelessly by way of a receiver that picks up Verizon’s signal and broadcasts it throughout your home via a Wi-Fi network.

Verizon 5G Home Internet pricing is $70 a month, or $50 a month for Verizon wireless customers. That rate includes equipment, and like all other Verizon plans, there are no contracts or data caps.

Verizon Internet Details

No contracts are required for any Verizon plans, and o data limits either. But there are other issues worth looking at when signing up with Verizon. Customer service is rated very high, and rate increases are not a common occurrence. Also, the Fios monthly rates are among the best. But, as always, don’t go off without reading the fine print.

Additional monthly fees

Depending on the plan you choose, you’ll be charged a monthly equipment fee. There’s a $15-a-month router charge for Fios plans, but that gets waived when you sign up for the Fios Gigabit service. If you don’t have that top-tier Fios plan, you could also avoid that monthly charge by buying your own router. Just make sure it’s compatible with your plan and speed.

As we mentioned above, DSL customers must get a home phone plan, which means there’s a one-time $30 charge for buying a router. You can avoid that fee if you have a compatible router. On the other hand, Verizon LTE customers will need to pay $240 for their cellular gateway device, though you also have the option of spreading that out as 24 monthly payments of $10. Verizon 5G customers don’t have to pay for their equipment, as everything comes included in the monthly price.

One-time installation fee

Again, your setup charge will depend on the type of Verizon plan you select. If you choose Fios, your setup charge will be $99, which is waived if you order online; the activation fee for DSL is $30 and is also waived if you order online.

No Verizon data caps

Unlike Cox, HughesNet, Xfinity and some other ISPs, Verizon does not place a data cap on customers. Therefore, you won’t need to worry about overage fees or slowing your data once you hit a certain threshold.

Verizon Promotions

Now through Jan. 19, 2022, new Verizon Fios subscribers will receive complimentary subscriptions to Disney Plus and AMC Plus for a year. That’s a total value of $17 a month for 12 months.

Get a $200 Verizon Gift Card + 12 mos Disney+ with a New Fios Gigabit plan

If you’re a new Verizon Fios Gigabit customer, you’ll earn a $200 Verizon gift card if you sign up by Jan. 19. New Fios 400 customers will get a $100 Verizon gift card and Fios 200 customers will receive a $50 Verizon gift card.

Also, with all Fios plans, there’s the opportunity to save up to $20 a month if you combine your internet signup with enrollment in Verizon Unlimited Wireless.

Last, Verizon also offers Fios Forward, making the same three Fios plans available to households who qualify for financial assistance (for example, those enrolled in the federal Lifeline program). Through this program, customers might be able to save $20 a month on Fios plans.

Verizon Fios flies high in customer satisfaction ratings

Verizon has consistently been at the top of the mark for customer service for several years. When you look at the 2021 American Customer Satisfaction Index numbers, it was again in the No. 1 spot — although it finished in a tie this year with competitor AT&T. 2021 was also the first time in over four years that Verizon’s numbers were down from the previous year, albeit by just two points. Still, that marks six years running that Verizon has been at the top spot in ACSI’s ISP benchmarks.

Is Verizon Fios Right for Me?

Verizon is second to none with it’s Fiber Internet. And, now as it’s been rated so high in customer service there seems to be no stopping Verizon. Although there is limited availability for Fios that means almost nothing to the consumers – unless they move around a lot. Visit their website, see if it’s available, and signup. If not see if Verizon LTE is available for you. If you’d like DSL I’d advise price shopping, as that’s not where Verizon shines. Verizon’s 5G home internet is also awesome, and worth taking a look at until it’s available in your area. Until then, Verizon Fios one of the premier options on the market.
