The era of cheap smartphones is ending as a severe shortage of memory chips drives up component costs and forces manufacturers to abandon low-end models.
According to technology market research and intelligence firm International Data Corporation (IDC), the smartphone market has undergone a transformation. Prices are sharply rising while units are declining, and consumers are expected to foot the bill.
- Memory and AI Costs: Surging demand for DRAM and NAND memory from artificial intelligence applications has caused component prices to spike by over 300%.
- Disappearing Budget Models: Low-margin devices, especially Android phones costing less than $400, are being canceled or phased out because they are no longer profitable to build.
- Rising Average Prices: According to reports from market researchers like IDC, average smartphone selling prices are projected to jump 27.6% in 2026 to around $581.
There is a predicted 16.7% decline in shipments, dropping to over 1 billion units. This is a notable decrease from earlier forecasts and marks the industry’s largest annual contraction ever.
Despite the drop in unit sales, the market is still expected to grow in value. IDC indicates that the overall market value will increase by 6.3% to $613 billion, driven by rising prices. A severe memory shortage that began in late 2025 is also contributing to this situation, causing shipments to decline by 27.2% year on year in the second half of 2026. The costs for NAND and DRAM memory have surged over 300% year on year, leaving vendors with fewer choices to manage these increased costs.
IDC warns that the segment for smartphones priced below $100 is facing serious challenges. Manufacturers focused on low-cost devices are now reducing their low-end models and shifting towards more expensive offerings. The average selling price of a smartphone is anticipated to rise to $581 in 2026, reflecting a rapid increase in costs passed on to consumers.
