Assess Your Situation

Your biggest bargaining chip is your value as a customer. Having a clear picture of your account’s standing is critical for an outcome in your favor.

Ask yourself these questions:
  • Do you pay your monthly bill on time?
  • Are you at or near the end of your contract?
  • Have you been a loyal long-time customer?

If the answer is “yes” on to any of these questions, then you’re in a great position to negotiate. Take a look at your internet service account monthly payments – online is easiest. Check out what you pay monthly/yearly, check to see it went up on any month, and quote that figure to your rep. If it’s not compelling enough quote what their competitor rates are.

Research Your Options

There has to be a consequence if your sales rep won’t lower the price of your service. In most cases, that consequence is to take your business elsewhere. To that end, familiarize yourself with all the ISPs in your area, what plans they offer, and how much other customers on your current plan are paying.

Phone Your ISP and Start Negotiating

I know many of you don’t like to haggle on the phone with a customer service, but it’s the best way to save money. And, these help centers are trained to deal with customers asking for lower rates. So you have to be assertive.

Having worked at and ISP in the past I know the process. Many times they just offer a better rate immediately. However, if it’s not something they have the authority to do you’ll have to push harder with revealing how you’re seeing better offers elsewhere. In those cases they may route you to an agent whose job is to customer retention. Bottom line: they know it costs sometimes hundreds to get a new customer to replace you, so they will almost always negotiate.
