Cheap High Speed Internet

It’s one thing to get cheap, or free, Internet Service from a Dial Up Provider, or hookup to one of the WIFI providers, but it’s quite another to get cheap HIGH SPEED Internet service! And, since regulators have now upped the threshold to over 25mb download speeds it’s quite a feet.

U.S. regulators have raised the standard for high-speed Internet, voting that only connections with download speeds of 25 megabits per second or faster will qualify as broadband.  For years I’ve been a strong proponent of DSL Internet as a cheap High-Speed Internet solution. I mean really – you can get it for $14.95/mo and that’s tough to beat! but since those speeds are only around 15mbs speeds we now have to impress you all with much better! I’m up for the task.

Right now the best game in town, with no catch or fine print, is Charter Spectrum – $29.99/mo. for speeds up to 60mbs! That’s a cable provider, and that rate is for bundles and (as always) only in limited areas. But, that is a very sweet deal without much hassle.  For other more aggressive, awesome, fancy deals you’ll have to look hard. Thankfully we’ve done the work for you. Below are varying ways to find Cheap High Speed Internet.

Low Income Internet
If your income is low enough and you live in a participating state, there are also a number of programs that offer low-cost high-speed Internet services. One that’s most fitting for financially challenged seniors is CenturyLink’s Internet Basics program, which is available in 37 states. This program offers high-speed DSL Internet service for just $10 a month for the first year ($21/month afterwards). It also offers offer a personal computer for just $150 and free introductory computer classes.

To qualify, you’ll need to show that you’re receiving certain types of government benefits, such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, SSI, home energy assistance or public housing assistance. Or, that your household income is at or below a certain percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Since it’s DSL it’s sufficient for email, paying the bills, and browsing the web but still not technically high-speed internet.

Other Plans

AT&T 50MBS plan is now very popular, and is offered at $30/mo. If it’s not on the site immediately you may have to call – if you do mention you saw it but forgot what ad…they have to give it to you.

One other who has great customer service is Earthlink.  A new cheap high speed internet plan they offer is called Earthlink HyperLinkTM Internet.  This is priced at a low $49.95/mo. for speeds up to 1 Gbps.  This deal was originally offered at $14.95/mo, but with much lower speeds. They raised the line speed, and the price, but it’s still a great bargain.

As more awesome deals come up we’ll report them.
